“HARD TIMES” NIGHT
DICKENS FELLOWSHIP “Hard Times” was the book under discussion at the fortnightly meeting of the Auckland branch of the Dickens Fellowship last evening, when there was a large attendance. Mr. J. W. Nealy presided and conducted the programme and also gave an excellent synopsis of the book. Readings were given as follow: "Bounderby,” Mr. J. E. Green: “Stephen Blackpool and his Wife,” Mrs. J. d’Authreau; “Stephen’s interview with Bounderby,” Mr. T. Clarkson: “Rachael,” Airs. Kealy; “Bounderby’s Wedding,” Miss D. M. Spargo; ”Bitzer, Gradgrind and Sleary,” Mr. C. Kidson. A fine character sketch of Mrs. Sparsit and Bounderby by Mrs. Kenneth Gordon and Mr. J. E. Green concluded the programme. The president, the Rev. A. B. Chappell, announced that he had received a letter from Mr. W. E. Arey which stated that, on behalf of Auckland Dickensians, he had laid a wreath on the tomb of Charles Dickens in Westminster Abbey. The next meeting will be devoted to a symposium of members’ favourite characters will be presided over by the Rev. Jasper Calder.
