EXPLANATION OF THEFT NOT BELIEVED The usual story of meeting a man in the street, and obtaining the goods from him, was told by Henry Samuel J ohnson, who was charged at the Police Court this morning with theft. Johnson was charged with stealing a dress valued at £lO 10s from Anui~ Devlin. Daisy Piggott, a second-hand dealer, identified the dress, and said that Johnson had brought it to her, telling her it was the property of an invalid sister, and asking £1 for it. Witness said that she gave 12s 6d for it. “I cannot accept your explanation, said Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., to Johnson.

Prisoner, who is at present serving a term of 12 months’ reformative treatment, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.
