Obituary

MR. H. L. PENNY The death Is reported from I church of Mr. Harold Lowry Penny, aged 44. Mr. Penny was Christchurch manager of the Canadian National Steamship Company, and was born in England. Mr. Penny was well known throughout New Zealand. MR. J. JOHNSON The sudden death at midnight of Mr. John Johnson, aged 52, is reported from Parkville, Carterton. Deceased was working yesterday, and in the evening audited the books of the Druids’ Lodge. He returned home in his usual spirits and died quietly in his sleep. Mr. Johnson was widely known throughout the Wairarapa as an agricultural engineer and threshing-mill proprietor. A year ago he suffered from a severe attack of pneumonia, which left him with a weak heart, and he had ever since been under medical care. No inquest will be necessary. He leaves a widow, two little daughters, and a step-daughter.

MR. JAMES MACKENZIE Mr. James Mackenzie, formerly Sur-veyor-General and later permanent head of the Lands and Survey Depart- '■ ment, has died in Wellington at the age of 79. He was a Fellow of the I Royal Geographical Society and just . before his resignation from the public service received the honour of 1.5.0. Mr. Mackenzie was born in Edinburgh in 1549 and came to New Zealand nine years later. He was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School and joined the Otago Provincial Survey Department in 1869, qualifying as a surveyor in 1871. He Held posts as district surveyor and chief <V*aughtsman and in 1901 was appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands and chief surveyor, Taranaki, later holding similar positions in Auckland and Wellington. He was appointed Surveyor-Gen-eral in 1911. Before he retired in 1915 he served on the Public Trust Board and the Government Insurance Board, Lands for Settlement and Native Land Purchase and the Advances to Settlers. Scenery and Forest Conservation Boards. Since his retirement he acted on the Karori School Committee and the Borough Council. Mr. Mackenzie leaves a widow and a scattered family. He is a brother of Sir Thomas Mackenzie.
