BUCKLEY AT TAUMARUNUI

SHOP-BREAKING AND THEFT CHARGES

FOR TRIAL AT HAMILTON Press Association. TAUMARUNUI, To-day. The Taumarunui courthouse was crowded this morning when John Leslie Buckley, who escaped from Mount Eden Gaol recently, appeared before justices. He was charged with breaking and entering the Taumarunui Sash and Door Factory and stealing £ 5 in cash and three cheques, breaking and entering the Taumarunui Hardware Company's premises and stealing money and cheques to the total value of £ls ISs 9d, and breaking and entering the shop of the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company and stealing money and goods to the value of £ 4 16s 9d. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, asked that the charges be taken separately, which was granted. The charge concerning the Taumarunui Hardware Company was taken first, and on this charge the accused, after evidence regarding identification and finger prints had been given, was committed to the Supreme Court at Hamilton August 28 for trial. The hearing of the other charges is proceeding. ARISTOCRATIC ALIAS Detective Walsh gave evidence of the finding of a finger print on a piece of glass at the hardware premises. Accused admitted to witness that he stayed at Meredith House on July 8 under the name of De Presque, and during the evening persuaded a party of golfers returning by car to Rafctihi to take him with them. The evidence of the finger-print experts revealed that the prints of Buckley’s thumb coincided with the marks found on the glass.
