An abnormal ruse in the waters of the Yangtse River gorges has flooded vast areas on the rjght and left banks. Thousands of people have been drowned. Reports from Hankow say the water rose 20ft in a few hours there in certain tributaries of the Yangtse, and 65ft in the gorges themselves. Hundreds of dead bodies are floating down stream. Ma*iy junks have been capsized and thousands of people have been flung helplessly into the rushing waters. Three junks filled with conscripted coolies were seized by soldiers at Hankow. They were being transported to Honan when they capsized. Two thousand of the coolies, with their hands tied and roped together, were drowned. Several foreign steamers in the gorges had miraculous escapes from ciu.ish.ing on the rocks.
