Queen's Own Is In Great Order
AUCKLANDERS ALL WELL COMMENT FROM ADDINGTON (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The light-harness season of will open at Addington on SaturdaV and with the excellent acceptances the prospects are most favourable. Practically no rain has fallen during the past five weeks, with the result that the majority of the locally-trained horses are in first-class fettle.* W. J. Tomkinson has a useful team in work, including Elzear. Young Blake. Pageant, Shadow-land. Vestas. Happy Rosa and Concliff. On more than one occasion Elzear and Young Blake have pleased the cirtics. and apparently are at the top of their form. Concliff is recovering from a chill and may not be at his best, while the remaining quartet have done a lot of solid work. Two From the Coast The West Coast owned pair. Vesuvius and Cannonball, are at the top of their form. The former worked a brilliant mile with Jewel Pointer on Tuesday, and should pick up a stake at the meeting. Since arriving at headquarters, j. Shaw has given Jewel Pointer. Western King, Native Prince and the trotter, Great Change, plenty of serviceable work, with and without hopples. Jewel Pointer should benefit by the racing on Saturday, and may be seen to advantage before the fixture closes The others look bright and well, and should pay expenses. J. J. Kenner ley has been keeping Peter Bingen, Jackie Audubon, Fight Ever and Nelson McElwyn up to the collar. Of the quartet Peter Bingen and Jackie Audubon have pleased th* most. Now at Her Best Queen’s Own has struck form again. Toward the latter end of last week F. G. Holmes worked the daughter of Adonis two miles without hopples, and the display was one of the finest seen at Addington for some considerable time. Holmes has Swiftbine and St. Maura freely engaged, but both will require to improve on their track work to win a stake. D. Withers was a visitor from Sockburn on Tuesday with Great Bingen. Great Actress, Real the Great and Peter Swift. Great Bingen, in company with Prince Pointer, covered a mile and a-half. The former was pulling very hard, and his effort was not impressive. Prince Pointer showed plenty of dash, and evidently is well forward. Sareila Pleases Great Actress was associated with Sareila (W. J. Smith) over twelve furlongs. The latter was going the better at the finish. The trotters, Peter Swift and Real the Great worked two miles. The latter made several mistakes, consequently the workout was not impressive. Sahib has been showing a lot of dash in his training. The Logan Pointer gelding will be ridden by F. E. Jones in the Electric Handicap, and is one of the ruling favourites. 3D. Bennett, who has not enjoyed much luck of late, is putting in a lot of time on Locanda Boy, and the Harold Dillon gelding Trimmer. The condition of both horses is satisfactory, and they should race prominently. Ready for the Fray Gold Jacket, who arrived last week, has so far not done much fast work. The son of Gold Bell bears a welltrained appearance, and his connections expect him to race well in the August Handicap. Orphan and Glenelg will represent iW. Warren’s stable at Addington. The former is nicely placed on 12yds in the Trial Handicap, and may be hard to dispose of. H. Frost was up from New Brighton with William the Great and Talent on two occasions, and Granite City once. The three horses stripped in good fettle and fairly revelled in their work. Peterwah, who is quartered at Santa Rosa farm, Halswell, was extended over a mile yesterday. The American-bred trotter showed a rare turn of speed, but apparently is short of work, as he had little left in reserve at the finish. A Useful Team J. Bullock has arrived with Kohara. Sister Beatrice and Dillon liuon. They were only jogged to-day, but will be worked out to-morrow. B. Jarden has put in an appearance with Acre and Maxegin. Acre has wintered well, and is carrying more condition than hitherto, consequently he should race much better. O. E. Hooper is due on Friday with King Pointer. The Lauriston-trained gelding is reported to be well, and a stake may come his w r ay at the meeting. On the first day he has tw r o engagements, the Electric and Queen Mary Handicaps, and already he has a largo army of admirers for the Electric Handicap. Other visiting trainers and horse# due during the next couple of days are:—J. Henderson, Brentloc, Terence Dillon, Dalnahine and Great Hope; LF. Berkett, Imprint and Louisiana: RTownley, Hector’s Own, Nelson McKinney and Bonny Spec; F. Holmes (wb° works his team at Canterbury Park has Logan Chief, Tom Thumb, Talaro, Bonny Logan and Eugene de Oro en gaged at the meeting. Other trainer* and horses that work there regulan> are R. W. Franks. Duke Bingen: anu J. Washington, Daphne de Oro. SOUTHERN TOPICS Last autumn Jolly Pet showed dashing ability in winning three races at short intervals. He ** by Coldstream Bells (Abbey Bells, »mP—Sal Tasker, 2.16) from that reliable performer Jolly’s Girl. Jo y Pet’s successes were accomplish* under the tuition of J. N. C.ar*ce, who has the gelding in P«ea*'ng order for the approaching spri 9 fixtures. Out Again D. Bennett has decided not to severe any longer with Audom * ’ The trotter has not been long »n after a spell, but he is going badly, and Bennett is of opinion tn Audominion is not likely to r his best form. A Useful Sort Matagouri has built up considers* b and is now" quite a different norse is pacing along in improved sty . I is a rare good two-miler, while useful on wet and heavy tracks. Time He Woke Up • Though he has been in work a few weeks the maiden trot * e ".. r i e rie is bounding along in s ,,.„ther Addington. Reverie is a ha,f ' b "?Lid to Xapland by Peter Moko, and shoul win a race this season. Bred on Good Lines __ The pacing gelding J ® lly . C !^2? e j. improved a lot since lie Th* Clarke’s stable at New Brighton- fof . half-brother to Jolly Pet 1 pacward for immediate racing, ana u ing resolutely in his truck
