AIDING UNEMPLOYED
HAMILTON TO RAISE LOAN
OPPOSITION BY COUNCILLORS (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. By a small majority the Hamilton Borough Council decided last evening to raise a loan of £I,OOO for unemployed relief works. The Mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow, made an eloquent appeal for the men who could not get work and said the position was improving. Last year the council raised three times the amount, so it was evident the economic position was better. Strong opposition was voiced by Cr. F. J. Farrell, who wanted to know when the saddling of ratepayers with the burden of the unemployed was going to stop. It was the duty of the Government and Charitable Aid Board to assist. Cr. F. W. Luxford pointed out they had voted £6,000 for the unemployed so far and a halt should be called. The engineer, Mr. R. P. Worley, explained that the work now being done by the unemployed was rejected by the ratepayers In the footpath loan. Crs. Luxford and J. E. Tidd described the raising of loans for the purpose as a pernicious system, and said the Government had made it easy to raise money because it wanted to be freed of the responsibility. The Mayor in reply said that relief works were better than the dole, and the motion in favour of the loan was carried by five votes to three.
