NO FREE RIDES
PAY FARES OR WALK MILITARY TRAINING SIDE-ISSUE (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Territorials and Senior Cadets attending compulsory drill must pay fares or walk —that is the attitude of the Defence Department, which declines to depart from traditional custom. Mr. H. G. R. Mason had asked a few days ago if free train transit could not be arranged for apprentices going to drill, as it was a hardship that they should have to pay fares out of their small earnings. In the reply, presented to-day, the Minister, the Hon. F. J. Rolleston, said trainees living within the three-mile radius had to find their own means of locomotion. Mr. J. A. Lee attacked this principle, stating that many young lads, in these days of unemployment, were the sole support of their families, yet had to pay their fares from their meagre resources
