POINTS WIN FOR CASEY
HARD-FOUGHT BOUT N.Z. TITLE NOT INVOLVED
(Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTOX X., Wednesday. Before a packed house Harry Casey beat Lachie McDonald on points in a 15-round event, the best fight here for years. The Dominion middle-weight title was not involved. Casey opened the bout with a right to the jaw, and the pair clinched. On the breakaway McDonald scored with both hands to the face and an uppercut to the jaw. Casey rushed in, using both hands with effect, especially his left, which found the challenger’s face. Both of them traded blows at long range, Casey having the best of the exchange. McDonald opened the second round with a solid right to the jaw, pushing Casey on the ropes. The latter retaliated with a left, followed by a right hook. The remainder of the round was uneventful, but in Casey’s favour. The third was also Casey’s after solid punching, but frequent clinches, both using effective smothers. McDonald was seen to advantage in the in-fighting, but Casey stood off, sending in left and right leads at long range.
Both traded body blows in the fourth round, Casey scoring rights to the jaw and left leads to the body. McDonald replied with both hands, finding Casey’s head. Clinches were frequent. The round was even.
McDonald opened the fifth, with a straight right to the jaw, but Casey tore in and sunk rights and lefts. After the breakaway McDonald scored heavily with a right to the head, but Casey evened the round up with left leads and there was little between them at the finish. Casey shook McDonald in the sixth with a right to the jaw. Both then exchanged rights and lefts at long range. The challenger forced Casey over to the ropes with hard lefts. The round was even. The seventh was Casey’s round throughout, McDonald stopping solid punishment, but sending back heavy right leads. The eighth was also Casey’s, after brisk exchanges, Casey rushing in to find McDonald’s face. The ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth were Casey’s, following hard fighting, but with Casey in the lead throughout, through frequent scoring with his left. In the fourteenth McDonald had Casey on the ropes and ripped in rights and lefts. The latter returned heavy jabs to the jaw, shaking McDonald. The exchanges from this point onwards were farly brisk and even. In the last round McDonald scored with right leads, but Casey’s right came over to his jaw too frequently. It was Casey’s round throughout. In an exhibition bout with Nelson McKnight, Charlie Purdy gave a brilliant display, showing wonderfully improved form, and proving he could use both hands effectively. Clarrie McKnight, in a six-round light-weight event, outpointed Sid Hogan, of Dannevirke, and gave an excellent exhibition. He was the winner throughout.
