Bennett, the Tory leader, declared that 591,000 people had left Canada in six years, and only 573,000 were brought in. “There is no work,” he said. “People are leaving the country. Why are there no jobs? “For the year ending May 31 Canada purchased 15,000.0001 bof butter, and sold 500,0001 b. Yet only two years ago Canada sold 25,009.0001 b. “There are 25.000 cases of New Zealand butter on order. The Canadian farmer is placed in unfair competition with New Zealand producers. Canadian butter is being displaced by New Zealand. The herds are being depleted. What is going to happen? Under thes«‘ circumstances, it is no wonder peoplj are leaving the country.” Speaking at Davidson, Saskatchewan. in reply to Mr. Bennett, the Prim i Minister, Mr. W. L. Mackenzie King, refuted the “blue ruin” talk, declaring that the prosperity of Canada was almost unprecedented.
