“PRIVATE SUMMER TIME”
Sir. — As “Cocky” has effectively replied to “Motor Mechanic’s” letter, there is no necessity to prolong the controversy. Your correspondent's conceptions of farm life are so utterly jaundiced as to make it difficult to imbue him with a reasonable understanding of what constitutes a day’s work. The Bill, following an impartial discussion, has been defeated, and the thanks of the farming community are due to those members who championed and personally conducted the campaign against its reintroduction. Nevertheless, I cannot see any deterrents against its adoption in municipal areas. While I was working in Auckland previous to any suggestions of the Summer Time Bill we had in operation a private daylight saving measure. During the summer months without advancing the clock we commenced work half an hour earlier and observed the new time when leaving work, thereby securing an additional half-hour for recreation and leisure. If it can be successfully accomplished in one instance I fail to perceive any reason why it cannot be adopted by business people generally, and then all would be satisfied and happy, except Mr. Sidey. HERD TESTER.
