WORKLESS WORKERS

COMPARISON FOR FOUR YEARS A comparison of the number of trad-e unionists unemployed in the last four years is given in the Auckland Chamber of Commerce Journal. The percentages of unemployed are given as follows:

“Owing to the seasonal character of unemployment the proper comparison is, of course, in each case with the figure for the corresponding months of other years. The highest rates of employment ai|>ear from these figures to be among general labourers (321 per cent); in shipping (29 per cent.); in sawmilling (18 per cent.) ; and in building and construction (14 per cent.). The source of the data is such that it is probable that these figures somewhat over-estimate the real extent of unemployment in times of depression,” says the writer.
