A new form of race, instituted by the A.J.C. for Warwick Farm, Sydney, proved a strong draw when entries were taken a fortnight ago. This was the Denham Plate and Purse, an idea that has been used by some Victorian courses for years. It is a divided race in which the handicapper separates the better horses from the inferior class, and puts them in two different fields. It is called the Denham Court Plate and Purse. All horses are entered for the one race, from Cup or Derby winners to maidens. The handicapper deals with them as one field, too, and is not allowed to give the top-weight less than 11. S. Then when his weights are completed, those between top-weight and 9st. form the Plate field, and are allowed 2st. 81b. oft their original handicap figures, thus making the lowest weight 6.7 and the top weight anything between 9st. and 10st., according to how good certain entrants might be. Those between 9st. and 6st. 71b. form the Purse field. The distance of each race is six furlongs, and the total stakes money is £450, making £225 for each event. In the event of either the Plate or Purse field being divided into heats on this account, the stake-money will, of course, be increased. These events were run at Warwick Farm on Saturday, and it was in the Purse that Prince Humphrey, making his first appearance as a threc-year-old, finished second.
