“MANY-SIDED TRUTH”

MR. BALDWIN’S JOKE DIVERSE SPEECHES (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (United Service) LONDON. Thursday. In the House of Commons the Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin, was asked whether the recent references by the Chancellor 6f the Exchequer, Mr. Winston Churchill, and the Home Secretary, Sir William Joynson-Hicks, to the question of safeguarding industries represented the policy of the Government. Mr. Baldwin replied: “Mr. Churchill’s speech appears to state less tersely but more eloquently the policy I laid down before the general election in 1924. In Sir William’s speech 1 am unable to find any definition of a policy, but I find a number of pertinent questions which, as he said truthfully. are worthy of consideration. “What struck me in the speeches was not the diversity of testimony, but the many-sidedness of truth.” (Loud laughter.) Mr. J. It. Clynes, Labour member for Platting, Manchester: Will the Prime Minister say which side represents the policy of the Government? Mr. Baldwin: I have already answered plainly that Mr. Churchill's speech exactly describes the Government’s policy, as laid down at the general election. In the Home Secretary’s speech I failed to discover any trace of a policy at all.”
