Thaw’s Protegee
Young Star Wins Out on Own Merits ANITA PAGE’S SUCCESS Anita Page, the pretty girl with the pathetic appeal in her gentie face, who is William Haines’s leading lady in "Telling the World." is one of the two girls brought to California about a year ago by Harry K. Thaw, the eccentric Pittsburg millionaire. Thaw expected to place both of the girls in the movies, and. It was said at the time, believed his advent in Hollywood would create a sensation. But he and his protegees were coldly received in the movie capital. Finding his reception less than he expected. Thaw turned round, like the prince who went up the hill, and went right back again, taking one of the girls with him. Miss Page, however, whose name was possibly Ann Rivers, determined to stay; laid siege to the citadel of the movie kingdom, and landed nicely with her new name of Anita Page. She did some small things and then was cast for the lead in “Telling the World.” Haines has full room in this picture for his peculiar impudence, for as a fresh report er he can do pretty nearly anything and get away with it. He is well suited in the part, perhaps as well as anything he has had yet in the movies, and he finds Misa Page an excellent foil.
