HIGHER STATUS CLAIMED
NEW LYNN MAY SOON BE BOROUGH COMMISSION TO DECIDE On Monday, a commission sitting in Auckland will hear the claims of New Lynn to change its status of a town district to that of a borough. Some months ago, a petition was sent to Parliament asking for the change, and the Xew Lynn Town Board lias appointed Mr. W. L. Titchener, chairman, Mr. C. E. 11. Putt, Works Committee chairman, and Mr. E. Greenslade, town clerk, to give evidence for the board. Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., is to preside at the commission. With him will be Mr. K. M. Graham, Commissioner of Crown Lands, and Mr. A. W. A. Sweetman, district valuer. The commission will farther consider the application of the Kelston area, about 100 acres, to come in the suggested new borough. Of the 68 householders there, 62 have signed an inclusion petition. INCREASE IN POPULATION New Lynn’s population is nearly 3,000. Since its formation *as a town district in 1910, with a population of 700, the rise of secondary industries and popularity as a residential area have increased its population greatly. The area fulfils easily the population and extension requirements of a borough. No fewer than 3,000 people are required, and the area should be not more than nine square miles. If the commission returns a report favouring the change, a poll will he taken. The New Lynn petition was signed by more than the required number of residents, and borough status gives a local body stricter powers in street construction, maintenance and drainage.
