UNION’S CLAIM FAILS

PAINTERS’ EARLY MORNING WORK

Judgment for the defendant was given by Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday in respect of a claim by the Auckland Painters’ Union against John Henderson, Ltd., for a penalty for an alleged breach of the painters’ and decorators’ award.

The defendant company employed several men who commenoed work at 7 a.m. and 7.30 a.m., and were paid overtime at the rate of time and ahalf. It was claimed double time should have been paid. The magistrate held that work commenced at 7 a.m. or 7.30 a.m., was overtime to be paid at the rate of time and a-half. There was no breach of the award.
