The Man Who Made the Prince Smile

THE features of H.I.H. Prince Takamatsu*, brother of the Japanese Emperor, were as impassive as those of a carved ivory image from his own land, as he entered the Lewis Eady Hall yesterday for the Rotary Club s luncheon. The Prince’s demeanour was in striking contrast to that of Vice-Admiral Kobayashi, who smiled and bowed as he genially greeted Auckland Rotarians. It was left to THE SUN photographer, however, to reveal the fact that there was something essentially human behind the Prince’s mask-like appearance. When the flashlight exploded tenth an unexpected bang, H.I.H. relaxed in his chair. For the first and only time during the function, he grinned, revealing a line of perfect Japanese teeth.
