FRAUD AT ARAPUNI
YOUNG ENGLISHMAN GAOLED STOWAWAY ON KAIWARRA Thomas Henry Barry, aged 37, who was charged at the Police Court this morning with obtaining credit by means of a valueless cheque and with stowing away on the s.s. Kaiwarra, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on the first charge and seven days on the second. “He was working at Arapuni last November,” said Chief-Detective Hammond, “and owed the local storekeeper £lO for groceries. Asking for a blank cheque form he filled it in for £ls and received £5 change. We have heard nothing about him since until he was arrested on this new charge.” Barry, who said that he had only come out from England a short time ago, deprecated the stowing away charge, saying that he had boarded the ship while intoxicated and had been carried away. In regard to the other charge, he would make restitution.
