NOTES AND COMMENTS ADDINGTON FIXTURE APPROACHING FACTS ABOUT COMPETITORS During the next fortnight chief interest in the trotting arena of New Zealand will be centred around Addington, where the annual National carnival of the New Zealand Metropolitan Club opens on Saturday, August 11. The form of horses taking part at the approaching fixture and their prospects will be followed by lightharness enthusiasts in the interim. Disappointing Sort Though Avenger ran many disappointing races in the past season, it is confidently anticipated that the New Brighton pacer will prove his worth in the new year. His work at present suggests that he will act more solidly in future. The Harold Dillon gelding appears to race better when fresh. Well-bred One The son of Taraire, known as Arikitoa, has thickened out a good deal. He has put on a lot of condition, and a rest has strengthened him considerably. Next season should take him to the front in a two-mile contest, and THE REASON WHY If it were not for the fact that Golden Bubbles was by Great Audubon, she would be at a very short price the next time she goes to the races, says a Southern writer. She does her work in perfect style, but she gets bustled on race days. Along with Happy Rosa, she recently returned from Australia, where she did some racing under P. Riddle. if he has inherited any of his sire’s qualifications should prove more than useful. In Splendid Order H. Frost has William the Great in splendid order. The pacer is big and healthy, and has come to hand very quickly. He is a fast beginner, and should improve on anything he has done in public. The son of Great Audubon is stayin on better and should do well over a distance this year. Ready for Carnival Week Talent is looking really well at present. He raced prominently but unsuccessfully at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting last month over sprint courses. He should be at his best this month. The son of Calm put up his best efforts last year at the National carnival. Doesn’t Mind the Mud The Brent. Locanda gelding Macaranda is an all-round pacer who Is due to win further prize-money this season. He has had a good spell, and is training on better than he has done previously. Macaranda is at home in either saddle or in harness, and the more mud the more he likes it. He was not over-raced last year. Getting a Good Mark Acron seems to remain fairly sound and he has done plenty of useful work at New Brighton. The mile recordholder, however, has lost a lot of his brilliancy and stamina, or else he will not produce it in a race. He is creeping out on a good however, and one of these days may “bolt” in. Joining the Matrons The Southland-owned square trotting mare Secret Link, by Lord Derby —Harold Dillon mare, has been retired from the racing game, and will be mated with Author Dillon. Secret Link is a good trotter, but there is a EXPERT OPINION pVER heard tell of Kingscraft? A three-year-old by that good old horse Quincy, from the Logan Pointer mare Colene Pointer, he has been to the races only twice, but on each occasion his party had the pleasure of collecting, and they were never at any time, in either event, given cause for anxiety or uneasiness. Kingscraft was not engaged in the classics during the season, but that admittedly good judge, D. Withers, who has driven the three-year-old in his races, informed “Abaydos” that the Quincy youngster was as good as anything at the age he had seen for a long time. So that's that.
strong dash of pacing blood in her pedigree, and she might produce & smart hoppled performer. Terence Dillon is O.K. The much-discussed pacer Terescv 1 ONE WITH PROSPECTS DE ORO must not be confused with that remarkable three-year-old. Daphne de Or©, although in the season about to be entered upon there is no saying just how good the former might turn out to be. The son of Rey de Oro only sported silk once this season, in the New Zealand Derby, in which he filled a place behind the brilliant Daphne. Eugene has been given every chance, certainly not overdone with racing, and should come to hand bright and early when activities are in full force. Dillon has done very well since he was recommissioned by J. Henderson, and he will visit Addington next month. After his success at Auckland he was turned out for a good rest. He may » not be forward enough for two-mile L races in August, but he should be at home in short-distanae contracts. > When stripped for the November twol mile heats he promises to be in frea: buckle. - Busy Bussell A. E. Bussell is working a big gac-r by Logan Pointer. He look* as though he has done a good deal of useful work in training. Bussell’s other care, Tamerlane, is in great heart, and promises to be quite ready to tackle all-comers at Addington. Will Airman Soar Higher? The aged gelding Airman is pacin*: up to winning standard at Addington, and it is prophesied that he will collect a prize this season. The son of Erin’s King only started on one occa* son he filled a minor place three tim*sion last year, but the previous sea- \ in five starts. Jackie Audubon proved one of ? the best horses in the land in Hi* 1 class during this season, and J he fails to go further up the ladder when the new session open* there will be something wrong with the } game. The son of Great Audubon and Lady Moth has a fine ’ turn of speed, and latterly has de- | veloped stamina of the right type, J which has led him to win over . two miles in good company. Jack* Audubon is freely engaged at the 3 National carnival, and will be ■ tough proposition in either 10 or 16-furlong items.
