CHAMPIONS LINE UP AT POINT-TO-POINT

SUNART AND OMAHU (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. Figuring in the ranks of the competitors at the point-to-point steeplechase meeting conducted by the Manawatu Hunt at Te Matai recently were several performers who have played prominent parts under more auspicious circumstances in the past. Unfortunately the heaviest defections for the day were forthcoming in the Newbury Open point-to-point, but the witnessing of Omahu, Sunart and Captain Wai in opposition was in itself interesting, the performance of the first-named making it appear that he is far from, being a back number. Although now approaching his 14th year, Omahu produced something like his old form when, after being somewhat slow to find his feet, he steadily made up his leeway and was with Captain Wai at the end of the second circuit. Over the last half-mile he outjumped and outstayed his most serious opponent to win by three and a-half lengths. Old Cracks Omahu made his last appearance on the race track at the Wellington winter meeting last season, having previously run third in the Winter Steeplechase at the Auckland meeting, Tuki and Kawini being in front of him on that occasion. R. Miles, who rode him on that occasion, was a spectator who studied the old fellow on Wednesday. Captain Wai, who attended Omahu home, is an aged gelding by Waimangu from Lochiela, now owned and trained by the Awapuni mentor, H. H. Doyle. While he has shown fair form over the fences, Captain Wai has still to return his purchase price. lie was taken through to the Napier Park meeting, but hit a fence hard when promising to be the winner. In the 1925-6 season Captain Wai won a hack double in the mud at Trentham, but he has been a disappointment since. The New Zealand Cup winner of 1924, Sunart, has descended to the hunting ranks, but he still looks every inch a thoroughbred, and it is evident that the outings with the hounds have done him good. For quite a period the Sunny Lake gelding went quite as well as Omahu, and he was up with the ultimate winner when he was unlucky enough to strike himself up on the stifle. Sunart raced in the nomination of Mr. M. E. Wood, brother-in-law of his original owner, Mr. R. A. McKenzie, who now races Piuthair and Callanmore. Another competitor in the open jumping event was the Birkenhead — shimose gelding Birkenose, who had four starts in the 1926-27 season for a first, one second and two thirds. It was at the Grand National meeting of 1926 that he gained his first minor placing when he attended two fellow' North Islanders in Rangi Sarto and Revel home in the Hunters’ Hurdles, the outing paving the way for his victory in the Hunt Club Cup, when there were such performers as Message Boy, Mainspring and Mazama to finish behind him. In the same month he was taken North to the Pakuranga Hunt fixture, when he was sent out favourite in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase, only to run third to Beau Cavalier and Stonewall. A second in the Manawatu Cup Steeplechase concluded his activities for the season, while early in the present season he ran second to Frisco Jack at the Hunt fixture. Owned by Mr. L. H. Collinson. master of the Manawatu Hounds, it would be pleasing to find him again figure under silk, but the years are creeping on and probably his owner prefers to rely upon one or two youngsters he has at present in training. REMINDERS Nominations for the Marton Jockey Club’s spring meeting close at 9 p.m. on Friday, August 17. Entries for the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring fixture are due at 8 p.m. on Monday, August 20.
