CANADIAN HIGHLANDER SAILS. — Alter completing the loading of New Zealand produce at Prince's Wharf, the Canadian National Steamships steamer Canadian Highlander sailed from Auckland last evening for New York, Boston, and Montreal. The vessel arrived at Auckland at the beginning of last month from Montreal. THE SOUTHERN CROSS.—The Melanesian Mission steamer Southern Cross is j expected to return to Auckland from the Solomon Islands shortly, but no advice of the vessel’s movements has been rej ceived by the Board of Missions since she heft; Auckland on May 1. According to j her schedule then, she was expected to return to Auckland on August 1. I MAHANA FROM LONDON.—The | Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer MaI liana, from London, anchored in the Hauraki Gulf last evening and proceeded ! this morning to the Motuihi anchorage to unload 250 tons of explosives. Tomorrow the vessel will come into port :to unload 4,000 tons of general merI ehandise for Auckland to the agency of I A. S. Paterson and Company, Limited, j The remainder of the cargo is for WellI ington and Lyttelton. COLLIER BALLS HEAD.—A strangelooking craft is the Balls Head, which arrived at Auckland last evening from I Grevmoutli. She is owned by Coal and i Bunkering Company, of Sydney, and was j built for coal-carrying only. She has a long, low hull, with the engines aft. She ! has on*- mast, with an unusually long ! single derrick, for handling ship’s stores I only, as the Balls head was intended to 1*« loaded by chutes and discharged by grabs. There is also a small wireless ; mast aft. The decks are concreted over. German-built, in 1911, she is highly effii cient for the work for which she was intended, and should be especially useful ! in working the West Coast bar harbours.
