MUSEUM MAINTENANCE
DEVONPORT’S ATTITUDE DECISION DEFERRED “It is a War Memorial, and as such we are interested,” said Mr. C. M. Browne at a meeting of the Devonport Borough Council last evening. “I favour defining our liability.” The council was being asked to approve of the proposed Auckland War Memorial Maintenance Bill, provided that a definite clause limiting the levy on local bodies to a maximum of £6,000 per annum be incorporated, and that the representation of the local bodies on the Museum Board should be increased. The deputy-mayor, Mr. J. Ilislop, proposed that Devonnort’s liability should be limited to £250 a year, falling in two years to £2OO. Mr. W. S. Campbell maintained that an irresponsible War Memorial Committee had erected a building far too big for the needs of the city, and that upkeep costs necessitated a levy on local bodies. That provision for a representative of the North Shore boroughs on the board should be made was- the suggestion of Cr. T. Walsh. The whole question has been deferred until the borough solicitor lias given his opinion.
