ROUND THE MANAWATIJ

INCREASES AT AWAPUNI MANY YOUNGSTERS IN WORK (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Tuesday. Two recent additions to G. New’s string’ are Teremoana, who has been brought in following a lengthy spell in the paddock as the result of a collision with a motor-car, and an Acre gelding, who was formerly owned by trainer J. Kelly. The latter has not yet been asked to race, but his solid quarters indicate that he may prove to be a galloper. Pantler, one of the disappointments of the racecourse, has made a reappearance at Awapuni and is to be brought up to concert pitch in preparation for racing. As he has been hacked round the roads for some time past, he has little condition to work off. At one stage of his career the Panmur© gelding proved capable of winning the Ashhurst but he has not always lived up to his track work. Pangolin, who ran a second and a miss at Trentham, is continuing his preparation in readiness for a trip to Riccarton. Another of the Panmure family, he has disappointed his connections on occasions also, but a change of trainers may work the necessary improvement. Del Sarfo, an inmate of R. E. I-latch’s stable, gives evidence of developing into a useful jumper. For the first two furlongs he flies, and there are few who can foot it with him in the early stages; an improvement in staying power woiild make him a likely proposition over either the battens or the bigger fences. Askari, who was somewhat unlucky at Trentham when he made a faulty jump, is not being asked a great deal. Following the hounds has apparently done him good. Trainer Hatch is also at present engaged in furthering the education of a quintette of youngsters. The Lord Quex —Sundust gelding is a fine upstanding sort, while a Leighton—Lady Ball filly also takes the eye as one of particular promise. Novices Coming In Trainer G. Jones has also his hands full with Statuary, Roundelay, Teapoy and Killogie, who are brought to the tracks later in the day. G. New has likewise two or three novices and there is indication that before the new season is far advanced Awapuni’s horse strength will number in the vicinity of 100. PI. H. Boyle is at present handling a Chief Ruler —Hallowvonia colt, who looks a very tractable sort; he is being kept on the lead meantime. A youngster with jumping blood in his veins is at present being broken in along Rangitikei Line. The property of one of the Havill family, the youngster is by Sir Antrim out of a Strowan mare, who first saw the light of day in the Halcombe district. A big raking type, he shows indication of the strain to which he belongs. J. Hastie has under his care at present Holus Bolus, who has improved in condition; Moutoa Treasury, who is brimful of life; a solid looking Gasbag youngster; and the veteran Santiago. While his team is small, it should prove very useful. The new tracks at Awapuni have had sheep on them for some time, and the surface has bedded down excellently. Although it is hardly probable that they will be thrown open to trainers before the middle of the spring, they should permit of the other tracks being given a needed spell. For this time of the year the tickets are, nevertheless, in wonderful order. REMINDERS Nominations for the Marton Jockey Club’s spring meeting close at 9 p.m. on Friday, August 17. Entries for the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring fixture are due at 8 p.m. on Monday, August 20. Final payments and acceptances for first day events at the C.J.C. Grand National meeting close on Thursday, August 9
