GAOL AND BIG FINE
MALING SENTENCED “PROSTITUTED HIS OFFICE” BAIL ALLOWED, PENDING APPEAL (United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, Tuesday. Mr. Gates, S.M., to-day gave his decision in the case In which Silas Young Maling, formerly deputy-man-ager of the city electricity department, was charged with, corruptly receiving £10,600 in connection with the power-house contract let to Babcock and Wilcox, Limited, of' London, by the late Sydney City Council. Maling was convicted, fined £SOO, and sentenced to six months* imprisonment. His Worship said accused had been false to his trust. He had prostituted his important office by levying blackmail on persons who were endeavouring to do business with his principals. Immediately sentence was delivered Maling’s counsel lodged an appeal to the quarter sessions of the Appeal Court, without prejudice to accused’s right to apply to the Full,Court for a writ of prohibition to restrain the magistrate from further acting upon the conviction. Maling was released on bail of £3OO pending the appeal.
