WARDERS ASSAULTED
PRISONER RESENTS MOVING BREAD AND WATER ORDERED (Special to THE SUNJ RAETIHI, Tuesday. Charges of assaulting two warders and causing damage to prison property were preferred against a prisoner from the Waikune Prison, in the Police Court, before justices yesterday. W. Glynn, officer in charge of the prison, said he issued instructions to Principal-Warder Chapman to remove accused from his cell to other quarters. The prisoner resented being removed, and Chapman got another warder to help him. Both warders were kicked, a cup of tea thrown over one, and a prison window was smashed. Warder Chapman said accused used very abusive language and struggled. Eventually they had to handcuff him before they could get him to obey instructions. The next day accused apologised for his actions. Mr. Glynn said the accused had complained of an attack of rheumatism, and was in bed at the time he issued the instructions for his removal. The place where he was to be removed to was a place reserved for men that were sick. Accused was medically examined, and the medical officer reported that accused had nothing the matter with him. The accused said that owing to working at getting stones out of a river the coldness had brought on an attack of rheumatism. He denied having deliberately attacked the warders and the kicks they received were owing to struggling with him in trying to get him out of his bunk. On the charge of assault accused was ordered bread and water diet for four days. On the charge of damaging property he was ordered on a bread end water diet for three days.
