SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
PROGRESS IN AUCKLAND Some Idea of the research being carried on in the physics department of the Auckland University College was given last evening by three papers read at a meeting of the Auckland Institute. Air. N. Alexander, M.Sc., gave an account of experiments made to check certain inperfectly-described researches made by an Edinburgh scientist into the absorption of Xrays. Mr. W. A. Macky, M.Sc.. who is shortly leaving for Cambridge, having won an 1851 Exhibition Scholarship, described a research into fractional electricity. Professor P. W. Burbidge outlined a tentative theory of the nature and production of frictional electricity, which, he explained, was really not connected with friction at all, but probably was produced by bringing two surfaces temporarily into close contact under certain favourable conditions. In another paper, Mr. "W. F. Short, M.Sc., described progress made by himself and Mr. M. 11. Briggs, in a research into the molecular structure of aromadendrene, a substance found in eucalyptus oils and probably in that of the manuka.
