Admiral’s Message

Admiral Kobayashi has issued the folio-wing message from his flagship, H.I.J.M.S. Idzumo: H.I.J.M.S. Idzumo, Auckland, July 31, 1928. “On the first opportunity on arrival at Auckland. I have pleasure in conveying to the city and citizens of Auckland the Hearty goodwill of the Japanese people and navy. “The present cruise of my squadron is one of a customary nature, purposing to give to the midshipmen and newly commissioned surgeons a sea experience and training essential to qualifying them for the naval profession. Our squadrons have often been on a visit here for such and other purposes, to every one of which the warmest reception has been accorded by this hospitable city. These remain with us fresh as most pleasant memories, and I must take this opportunity to express the deep gratitude of the Japanese Navy. “We are very glad to come into direct contact with you, and to understand and know each other better, for thus we shall see our cherished wish to contribute to the friendship between New Zealand and Japan realised. We are also glad that our arrival has timed with the signature of an important commercial agreement between our tioo countries. Nothing could have been a more auspicious coincidence. “1 heartily wish and trust that the commercial understanding so felicitously embodied will prove instrumental of fostering happier relations, not only in trade and commerce, but also in friendship between us, and we shall feel very gratified if our present visit will be of any little service to attaining this happy result. VICE-ADMIRAL, S. KOBAYASHI, Commanding His Imperial Japanese Majesty’s Training Squadron.
