GARAGE GOSSIP

The annual meeting of the North Island Motor Union will be held at Carterton during - the third week in August.

The annual driving licence has been replaced in Ceylon by a certifiate of competency, which will remain in force until cancelled by a court of law. * # * An interesting address on “The Romance of the Motor” was given by Mr. D. W. Bay, sales manager of General Motors, at a function recently held in Otahuhu to introduce the latest model “Oldsmobile.” * * * “Half the market for American motor-cars is virtually assured every year by the demand for replacements for worn-out cars.” says the American National Automobile Chamber of Commerce. * * * After making five consecutive issues of its year book and North Island road guide, the Wellington Automobile Club, it is gathered, is not proceeding with a new issue for 1929. Action in the matter of a year book in subsequent years will, of course, be at the discretion op the incoming committee in each year. Last year the Wairarapa Automobile Association ordered a big supply of the North Island road guides produced under the auspices of the Auckland Automobile Association. This year the association has advised Auckland that it does not want copies of the projected new edition. * * * Signs for the Pokeno-Paeroa and Thames routes are being prepared by the A.A.A. and the signposting van will cover the district during the next few weekfe. A complete survey is also being made of the Taupiri-Orini-Morrinsville Road, the Morrinsville-Tahuna, Patetonga Road, and the Hamilton-Thames route. Attention will also be paid to the Matamata-Morrlnsville highway. The work of the signposting patrol will be appreciated by tourists next summer. The association has never been laggard with signposting, but the acquisition of the specially-equipped truck has facilitated the work of checking over routes posted a few years ago, and, in addition, attention can be given to new territory without stint.
