MR. J. H. WITHEFORD
EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY Among the many congratulatory messages received by Mr. J. H. Witheford, of Northcote, who was prominent in New Zealand politics at the beginning of the century, and who is celegrating his 80th birthday, is a telegram from the Prime Minister, saying: “Please accept my hearty congratulations and good wishes. May you be spared to enjoy many more anniversaries.” Just over 25 years ago Mr. Witheford was one of the most prominent public men in Auckland, but he has now long retired from active public hfe. He entered politics at a by-elec-tion in 1900 as one of the three representatives of the united Auckland constituency in the House of Representatives. He headed the poll at the 1902 general election, but he did not contest the next election. Mr. Witheford was elected the second Mayor of Birknehead in 1900, and he was also chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board for a term. In 1901 he was invited to be a candidate for the mayoralty of Auckland, but he declined to be an election opponent of Dr John, later Sir John, Logan Campbell. *
