TUBERCULAR TREATMENT
SPECIAL DIVISION IDEA OPPOSED
MR. WM. WALLACE’S OPINION
The chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board,* Mr. William Wallace is opposed to the recommendation of the tuberculosis committee that a division of tuberculosis should be established in the Health Lepartment under a director. Mr. Wallace’s opinion is that one sanatorium should be established for the North Island. He suggested that it should be erected in an inland situation, for instance between Waiouru and the National Park. * With regard to the recommendation that hospital boards should be encouraged to establish tuberculosis dispensaries, Mr. Wallace said Lr. A. N. McKelvey, medical officer in charge of the Infirmary, was looked upon as the board’s tuberculosis expert. Persons who were unable to pay for treatment could always receive attention from him. At the present time there were no facilities for a dispensary, and there would not be until a large administrative block was erected. The Auckland Board had had the question of accommodation for advanced cases under consideration for some time past. New shelters would probably be erected at Epsom in the near future.
