GAVE UP AFTER 13 MILES (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (United Service) LONDON, Friday. * Miss Mercedes Gleitze made a second attempt to-day to swim the Irish Channel from Donachadee, County Down, to Portpatrick, Scotland, a distance in a straight line of *22 miles. She abandoned the effort after having swum 13 miles in 14 hours.

Miss Gleitze, a London typiste, made a previous attempt to swim the Irish Channel on June 24 last. On that occasion she had to abandon the attempt after six hours in the water. Early in April she swam the Straits of Gibraltar and last year the English Channel.
