BYRD’S BARQUENTINE
SHIP FOR SOUTH POLAR . EXPEDITION REPAIRS AT NEW Y.ORK. The Samson, a three-masted bar- J quentine, with a compound engine which is to' he used as mother ship by Commander Richard E. Byrd's j Antarctic expedition, arrived in New York after a three weeks’ run from Norway.
Commander Byrd, his chief engineer, Thomas Mulroy, and several friends, went out to Quarantine on a tug owned by the Moran Towing Company of New York, to meet the ship. The Samson was placed in drydock for classification, repairs, general inspection and new installations. The Samson is a hardy craft which has seen service as an ice-breaker in the Arctic regions. It is 161 ft over all, has a 27ft beam and displacement of 512 tons.
