“Little Brown Men” Inspect Wellington

JAPANESE SAILORS ASHORE (Special to THE SUN) THURSDAY, Thursday. Marching through the streets abreast, little brown men with solemn faces gravely inspected the principal places of interest hi Wellington. Weird Japanese characters tcere upon their caps, and one broad white stripe on their collars took the place of the three narrow ones on the British sailor's uniform. At every street corner knots of them surrounded shipmates, who unfolded and studied large maps of the capital and its environs. Most amusing of all was the sight of Wellington citizens attempting to direct totally uncomprehending Japs to some place which they probably did not wish to reach. After minutes of gesticulation, the citizens would pause baffled, and the Japanese, smiling polite thanks, would march on. The next street corner would see the solemn study of the maps repeated.
