Minister Refuses to Grant Inquiry

THE MURRAY CHARGES “BETWEEN COUNCIL AND ELECTORS” “The evidence submitted does not justify the unusual action of interfering between parties which are capable of looking after their own affairs,” stated the Undersecretary, Department of Internal Affairs, in advising the City Council last evening that the Minister had finally decided that he would take no action to set up an inquiry into the Murray charges. In making this decision Cabinet, according to the letter, decided that the question was primarily one between the electors and the council, and there was not sufficient reason for interfering. The Mayor moved that in view of this decision the letter be received, that no further action be taken in the direction of a magisterial inquiry, and that the investigating committee decide whether any further action is necessary or desirable. This was passed without discussion.
