The hearing was continued to-day of the case in which Silas Young Mating is charged with corruptly receiving £10,600 in connection with the power-house contract between Babcock and Wilcox, of London, and the late Sydney City Council. Inspector Mackay gave details of his investigations and his conversations with Maling in New Zealand. Arthur Henry Albert recounted an interview with Maling, in which Maling asked him to allow certain moneys from England to pass through his bank account. A sum of £10,600 came, and witness got none of it. He had never received any acknowledgment of the payment of the money to Maling. Witness admitted that he had had trouble with the Income Tax Department, but said it was not over the money mentioned. He denied telling Maling that “the - whole thing had come out” or that he had been assessed for a large sum which he could not pay. The hearing was adjourned.
