SIRE GOLD BELL IN NEW QUARTERS
ashhurst trainer decides to breed ON SOUND LINES
Through the enterprise of ownertrainer W. H. Oliver, of Ashhurst, breeders in the Manawatu and adjacent districts will have a splendid chance of improving their stock in the near future, as he has purchased the high class and successful sire Gold Bell, who is now doing stud duty in Palmerston North. Gold Bell, a son of Capitalist (Rothschild —Berlin Maid) and Merry Bell (Ha Ha —Silver Bell) has proved a wonderful sire while doing duty in
the Auckland province for Tom Roe, of Mangere, and his progeny have met with great success, which is all the more remarkable, in view of the limited number of classy mares he has been associated with. During the last live seasons, representatives of the Capitalist horse have won the large amount of £33,109 in stake money, the tally being made up as follows: £ 1923- 5,908 1924- 7,575 1925- 6,834 1926- 7,662 1927- 7,130 Some Good Ones Gold Bell has produced high grade horses in both the trotting and pacing departments, and in Waikaha (trotter) and Gold Jacket (pacer) he has representatives that are in the first flight of New Zealand’s light harness candidates. While established at Mangere the stallion proved himself a great projenitor, and those interested in the
breeding business in the southern and middle portion of the North Island will have an excellent opportunity of raising stock that will later on prove most valuable on the race track. Manawatu enthusiasts were formerly fortunate in having such a classy horse as Native King, the fine son of Nelson Bingen and Novice, to fill the requirements, and hts record is also a remarkable one, as out of ten sons and daughters produced by him, eight have proved winners.
Breeders In Clover The good fortune that smiled on breeders in that area should continue, as in Gold Bell they have one which has delivered the goods truly and well and will ably take the place of Native King, who ha<s returned to Canterbury. Bill Oliver will be a busy man during the incoming season, as besides attending to the breeding of high class stock, he has several young ones to prepare for future engagements. One of these is a rising three-year-old colt by Loch Moigh from Lizzie Franz, who is also the dam of a Native King two-year-old, which the Ashhurst trainer has a high opinion of. A full brother to the trotter Floraline (Florizel— Salvo Lash) is also receiving attention at Oliver’s hands, and another novice is a mare by St. Kevin—Betty Billon. Then there is the more experienced Blue Pedro and the Wanganui Cup winner, High Sea, to be attended to, and the Oliver livery should be seen to advantage when the season is in full swing. ON HER MARK •tlfH EN the Auckland Handicapper ▼ » baited the hook for Native Star at the June fixture with a tasty morsel at 4.32 after tramping 4.30 2-5 at Addington last Easter for the big fish, it did not tempt “Skipper” Price to nibble at the stake. The Southern handicapper, however, has been too fly to put any glitter on the minnow and the classy Palmerston North trotter is set squarely on a 4.30 peg. Provided the daughter of Native King is in her best form before the carnival draws to a close she will show those who congregate at Addington that there was no fluke about her splendid performance when she last visited the Cathedral City.
