FIXING UP THE PAYMENT EVIDENCE AGAINST HIM (United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) SYDNEY, Tuesday. The hearing was continued to-day of the case in. which Silas Young Maling is charged with corruptly receiving £10,600 in connection with the power-house contract between Babcock and Wilcox, of London, and the late Sydney City Council. The attorney and general manager in Australia for the firm named, Mr. A. J. Arnot, continued his evidence. "Witness said he had told Maling, who was deputy-manager of the city electricity department at the time, that the latter was running a great risk when he said he would suggest a suitable person through whom the £10,600 could be sent from England. Maling had laughed and replied that there was no risk. The £6OO added to the £IO,OOO was to cover expenses. Witness said he wrote to his firm’s principal in England and the money was sent out later Mr. Arnot said the £10,600 came out of his firm’s resources and was not added to the contract price. He had told the Royal Commission that on a previous occasion he had had to give £250 to an alderman. He did not regard that as graft, but merely as a present. The hearing was adjourned.
