Ancient Rites of Chinese Abolished by Nationalists
(United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (United Service) Received 10.30 a.m. SHANGHAI, Tuesday. FURTHER evidence of the Nationalist determination to abolish traces of ancient China is contained in a message from Peking (renamed Peiping), stating that all Manchu marriage rites, funeral ceremonies, and the processions which have been customary for centuries must be abolished, the Government considering that such do not conform with the Nationalist principles, which are revolutionary, and are based upon modern ideas. The situation is quiet. Several foreign warships have arrived, and are awaiting developments. Measures have been adopted for the protection of foreign life and property.
