DISMAL NEWS FROM AFRICA
HADLEY LOST FOR REST OF TOUR
SIX MEN NOW UNABLE TO PLAY
PRETORIA MATCH ONE OF THE HARDEST
THE latest news about the All Blacks does not make cheerful reading. Hadley’s shoulder is so badly injured that, like Kilby and Harvey, he will probably not play again on the tour. McGregor has not recovered yet, and Rushbrook has influenza. And to-day s match against Pretoria districts is regarded as one of the hardest of the tour. Reed. 9.5 a.m. PRETORIA, Tuesday. The AH Black team to play Pretoria districts to-morrow is as follows (one name omitted):— Lindsay Lucas Carleton Grenside Nicholls Johnson Dailey Ward McWilliams M. Brownlie Alley c. Brownlie Hore Swain The Pretoria team is as follows: Gush De Wit Mclntyre Dobie Libenberg Kotze Chapman Glathaar Strachan Geyser Mortimer Geere Kruger Van Ruten Nykamp The match is regarded as a minor test, and one of the hardest of the tour. The Pretoria pack is considered to be as good as the Transvaal pack, and great things are expected of the Pretoria backs. Harvey comes out of hospital on Saturday. It is proposed to send him to Capetown, where the climate should suit him. He will not play any more this tour. Hadley’s shoulder was X-rayed, and found to be badly damaged. He also is not likely to play again on the tour. The Aucklander is particularly unlucky, for he has been one of the
best all-round forwards on the side. Burrows is almost fit again, and should he able to take the field in about a week. McGregor’s knee Is improving, but it will be some time before he plays. Kilby’s ankle comes out of plaster on Thursday. After that he should be able to limp around without crutches. Rushbrook is now suffering from influenza.
Nicholls is replacing Strang. These are the only alterations in what is practically a. test back team. With Hadley, Stewart, Finlayson and Hazlett out of the forwards, however, the New Zealanders are not fielding their strongest pack. The Pretoria team, which is stated to be very strong forward, contains quite a number of men who have played against the All Blacks in previous games. In South Africa they appear to have a very accommodating practice of making up composite teams from various districts, and apparently this makes it possible for them to get together a minor test team whenever they consider it advisable. In Dobie and Kotze the Pretoria side possesses two
high-class backs. Dobie, who plays for the Harlequins at Pretoria, is stated to be a dashy, speedy type of ideal physique, but is apt to be unreliable in his handling. Kotze, a University man, is a strong, determined runner, who
has played good club football this season.
To-morrow Dobie will represent Pretoria Districts. On July 7 he represented Northern Districts, and on June 9 he turned out against the All Blacks for Transvaal. Kotze. Liebenberg,
