MINERS’ CLOSE CALL

TRAPPED BY FALL OF EARTH MANAGER’S PROMPT ACTION (From Our Own Correspondent.) THAMES, Tuesday. Several men were working in the Moanataiari mine when 500 tons of earth fell and blocked the entrance tp the mine. As the supply of air was cut off there was danger of the men being asphyxiated. The mine manager, Mr. S. Baker, who was outside at the time, rushed to another entrance, and, kicking open a light barrier, was able to release the miners before they knew of the mishap. The fall will take several days to clear. A landslide also occurred last night near the mouth of the Lucky Shol mine, which was empty at the time. Workmen will be engaged for several days in removing the fall, which has not blocked the entrance to the mine.
