CHAMPION WALKER. The 20 miles walking championship of New South Wales was won by G. Smith in 3h 23m 235. CIRCUS-TRAIN WRECK.—A circus train was wrecked near Farmington. New Hampshire. Three white men and five negroes were killed. Twenty People are missing.—A.P.A.-U.S. WEST INDIA CABLE.—The Eastern Telegraph Company Ims acquired shares in the Direct West India Cable Company, which controls the Halifax, Bermuda, Cuba, West Indian and Panama Companies. These operate S.OOO miles of cables and also recentlyinstalled wireless stations. —A.P.A.U.S. SCHUBERT FESTIVAL.—As a climax to the Schubert festival at Vienna LoO.OOO people marched in procession to tlie Concert Hall. They represented the German colonies throughout the world. It was the most imspectacle of German unity since tho war. There were 1,000,000 spectators.— A.P. A. CANCER INOCULATION. A message from Havana, Cuba, says a Proposal for the voluntary inoculation °f condemned prisoners with cancer germs for the purposes of studying the Results has been approved by the Board of National Sanitation. Any Prisoners cured in 12 years will be set tree. The proposal is to go to Con-gress.—A.P.A.-US. STORY DENlED.—Officials of tlie Commonwealth and Aberdeen Line indignantly deny a statement published m a London paper to the effect that Police guard was placed on board the Corinthic. which is taking back to Australia the crew of the Jervis Bay. they characterise the report as a canard and state that the men went °n board the Corinthic without incideQt and without protest.—A.P.A. FARM TRAGEDY.—A shocking tragedy on a farm is reported. Mrs. Tander, wife of a farmer at Coochera, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, and her three children, aged three years, tw ° years and one year respectively, were found dead at their home. It is relieved they were poisoned. The father *~ ncl a farm hand were the only other persons on the property.
