Mrs. John Rawson has returned from Christchurch and is at present staying with ' her sister, Mrs. Foote, Matara Road, Remuera. Mrs. Duke, of Wellington, and Miss C. Hosking, of Alasterton, returned to Auckland at the week-end from a brief visit to Russell. Miss M. Nixon, who has been visiting her sisters at Mount Albert, also Hamilton and Helensville, has returned to her home at Ho wick. Miss B. Baigent and Miss R. Newman, of Nelson, are visiting Auckland and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. Richmond Fairey, of Herne Bay. Mrs. N. A. Winter left by the Poraare last evening for Norfolk Island, where she will join her husband, who recently opened a secondary school on the island. * * * A RECENT WEDDING HOMERSHAM—PEMBERTON A wedding of considerable local interest took place at the Anglican Church, Taumarunui, when Edit.h Constance, second daughter cf Mr. and Mrs. Sefton Pemberton, of Temuka, South Island, was married to Hugh Maxwell, fourth son of Mrs. and the late Mr. Charles Homersham, of Aukopae, Wanganui River. The Rev. Mr. Stanley, of Ohakune, performed the ceremony, and Miss Grice presided at the organ. The bride’s dress was of oysterwhite crepe de chine, with heavilybeaded skirt and silver fringe; her veil was beautifully worked, and she carried a bouquet of pink, white and mauve carnations and maidenhair fern. Miss Eleanor Pemberton, of Waitomo, a sister, was in attendance as bridesmaid, and wore a dress of pale pink taffeta with petalled hem, yoke and bouffant bow of eau de nil. She wore a bandeau of beaded eau de nil, and carried a bouquet of carnations and maidenhair fern. The bridegroom was attended by Mr. A. J. Allison as best man. After the ceremony a reception was held at Mrs. Murray’s tea rooms, when the hostess received her guests in a smart dress of black silk crepe, with lace panel back and front over cardinal satin, and a scarf to tone. After supper, dancing was indulged in till midnight, Miss Grice supplying delightful music. Mr. and Mrs. Homersham. then joined the express eji route for their honeymoon in the South Island, the bride travelling in a nattier blue dress piped with white georgette, a fawn coat, with hat and fur to match. SILVER WEDDING A delightful evening was spent on Saturday when Mr. aiid Mrs. Boy.es entertained over 40 friends to celebrate their silver wedding. Mrs. AlcEellan, of Rockfield Road, Ellerslie, kindly lent her home for the occasion. Anenomes and jonquils formed a beautiful decoration. During the evening Mrs. Boyes was the recipient of a pair of gold photoframes. DANCE PARTY Mr. and Mrs. A. Richmond Fairey gave a delightful little dance party at “Coomberfisliacre,” their residence in Marine Parade, Herne Bay, last evening, in honour of Miss B. Baigent and Miss R. Newman, of Nelson, who are spending a holiday in Auckland. Gaily-coloured electric lights, ferns and banks of spring flowers made attractive decorations in the various rooms. The guests included: Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Cramp, Mr. and Mrs. T. .T. Cole, Mr. and Mrs. G D Cole, Mr and Mrs. A. O. Glasse, Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Howell and Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Rich-White DINNER PARTY A bright dinner party was held on Saturday at the residence of Air. and Airs. T. Maxwell, Belmont Avenue, Alount Albert, the occasion being the birthdays of Alesdames Samson, Cooper and Tyson, sister and neices of the hostess. The rooms were decorated with cream roses and ferns. The hostess wore a smart frock of gold lace. Airs. Samson was in lacquer red crepe de chine. Airs. Cooper chose peacock blue silk crepe. Airs. Tyson wore champagne taffeta relieved with pale green. Competitions were held in the music room, and prizes were won by Air., Airs, and Alaster. Samson, Alesdames Cooper, Martinson and Robinson. Among the guests were Alesdames Alartinson, R. C. ROWING CLUB DANCE FOR RELIEF FUNDS The folk at Devonport are determined that it shall not be said that, in times of stress, they forgot those in need. Last evening the North Shore Rowing Club gave a big dance to help swell unemployed relief funds. One-third of the proceeds will be given toward the upkeep of the dosshouse controlled by Canon Grant Cowen in Parnell. A huge bell of streamers roofed in the entire floor, and the wall decorations of arched Canary Island palms made a delicate contrast. The Kit Kat Rand gave its services gratuitously. Mrs. C. Seagar, frocked in navy satin and beige lace, whose husband is president of the rowing club, had command of a willing committee, and among the guests were Mrs. T. C. Enright, chairwoman of the Melrose Park Ladies’ Committee. and the Mayoress, Mrs. E. Aldridge, the latter gowned in heavily embossed black georgette. The committee included: Mrs. C Farquharson, Japanese blue satin, with shoulder posy and metal relief. Mrs. S. G. Rutland, peach crepe de chine and shawl. Mrs. E. Sharp, jet sequinned georgette. E. Aldridge, Mayor, explained the unemployed relief scheme and the park proposal, and thanked the club for its splendid spirit in promoting the dance. On behalf of the club, he thanked those who had given special aid with the dance. SOCIAL AT MT. ALBERT MISS SUTHERLAND HONOURED A social was held last evening in the Mount Albert Presbyterian Church Hall for the purpose of bidding farewell to Aliss Katherine Sutherland, of the manse, who is about to make a trip to Australia. Air. Mercer, in presenting Aliss Sutherland with a wallet of notes, spoke of her energetic work among the people, and the esteem in which she was held. Airs. Muir, who will accompany Aliss Sutherland on the trip, was presented with a bouquet of flowers. Replying, Aliss Sutherland, said she appreciated the gift which was an expression of goodwill, and on her return she would again take up the church work. During the evening members of the congregation gave musical items.
To prepare beetroot quickly, peel and slice fairly thin, put iu saucepan with sugar, salt and a few cloves, almost cover with water and boil till soft with lid on (about 20 minutes); add vinegar when cooked.

FRENCH CLUB MEETS MEMBERS GIVE PLAY A largely-attended meeting of the Auckland French Club was held in the club rooms last evening. The members were received by Mrs. G. S. Coldham, wearing a frock of black georgette trimmed with oriental embroidery. The following programme, arranged by Mr. G. S. Coldham, assisted by scholars of the Mount Albert Grammar School, was presented: Songs by Miss Thelma Duffin and Mr. Fryer-Raisher; clarinet solo by Mr. L. Montgomery, and a comedy in three acts, “L’Avocat Patelin,” in which parts were taken by Mr. Coldham, D. R. Connell, W. S. Rapson, F. H. Robertson. A. Id. W. Marte, W. J. Beech, J. W. Coney, C. T. Johns, 11. B. Brownrigg, R. J. Walton and C. B. Floyd.
COUNCIL OF WOMEN DR. NORTHCROFTS LECTURE The monthly meeting of tlie Auckland branch of the National Couscil of Women was held in the Y.W.C.A. last evening, when Miss B. Carnachan presided over a good attendance. The members stood for one minute in silence as a mark of respect for the lata Mrs. Hooper, of Takapuna. Dr. Hilda Nortlicroft addressed the meeting on the subject of the Mental Defectives Amendment Bill, now before the House. Tlio subjects of women police and open-air schools were again discussed. and the reports of the subcommittees were read. “MERRYMAKERS’. ” DANCE A carnival dance was held by the Merrymakers’ Club in the Victoria Hall, Birkenhead, on Saturday evening, when a large crowd was present. I‘ avours of various kinds, streamers, and balloons all helped to make the evening gay. The Syncopaters’ Orchestra played attractive dance music.
