Spine-Grafting
“Bold” Operation often Done in Auckland
-NOT NEW,” SAYS DOCTOR The “bold" operation of grafting a piece of bone on the spine of a patient, performed by a young surgeon in Birmingham (according to yesterday’s cables), has been done several times in Auckland. At the present time there is a girl in the Auckland Hospital who has come successfully through the operation and is on the way to recovery. SSe was suffering from tuberculous disease of the spine, before the piece of healthy bone was grafted on. “The grafting of bone on the spine has been performed several times here.” said Dr. C. E. Maguire, medical superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, today. “The usual method is to take a piece from the shinbone for the operation. It is called the Albee bone graft, after the American surgeon who first described it.”
