EXPOSED GAS BURNERS

USED FOR RIPENING FRUIT “A DANGEROUS PRACTICE” (Special 10 THE SUN) WANGANUI, To-day. A burning gas jet in a small cupboard under a staircase was discovered by Superintendent Williams, of the City Fire Brigade, when investigating the premises of a Chinese fruiterer after considerable damage had been done by fire. The gas was kept continuously alight for the purpose of ripening fruit. This practice, he was informed, had been going on for some considerable time.

“It is very dangerous,” he said, “and if it is going on in other such shops it should be prohibited immediately.” The buildings were wooden and very old.
