MRS. SARAH POLLARD Mrs. Sarah Pollard, widow of the late Mr. Alfred Pollard, of Auckland, died at the home of her soil, Mr. G. G. Pollard, Arney Hoad. Remuera, on Sunday, at the age of 79. Born in Auckland, Mrs. Pollard was married GO years ago in All Saints’ Church, Ponsonby, and spent her early married life on the Coromandel and Thames goldfields. Mrs. Pollard is survived by eight children. There are 35 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. SISTER M. DE P. McALISTER The death of Sister Mary dc Pazzi McAlister, of the Order of the Sisters of Mercy, occurred at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital yesterday, *at the age of 58. Born in Galway, Ireland, Sister Mary went to Sydney, where she was instructed in nursing at St. Vincent’s Hospital. She returned to England, nursing there and on the Continent. Returning to Sydney, she later came to Auckland, and was a nurse at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital. She entered St. Mary’s Convent in 1911. Her health had been failing for several years. MRS. S. J. COLLINS The death occurred of Mrs. Salina Jano Collins at the home of her daughter, Mrs. P. Cawdron, Amy Street, Ellerslie, on Saturday, at the age of 88. Born at Taunton, Somersetshire, Mrs. Collins arrived in Hew Zealand with her husband, the late Mr. Henry Collins, in 1877. Mr. Collins was farming at Epsom and Ngaruawahia, but later returned to Auckland. He died 15 years ago. Mrs. Collins is survived by three sons—Mr. W. Collins, Avondale, Mr. J. Collins, Ellerslie, and Mr. Edwin Collins, Parnell, and two daughters, Mrs. P. Welch, Edendale, and Mrs. P. Cawdron, Ellerslie. There are 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. MRS. E. GRAY The death of Mrs. Elizabeth Gray, widow of Mr. William Gray, occurred yesterday at Pukerimu, at tlie age of G 9 years. She was born at Shercocli, County Cavan, Ireland, and came out to New Zealand 44 years ago, and lived at East Tamaki for seven years. After her marriage she came to Cambridge, where she lived until eight years ago, when on her husband’s retirement she went to live at Remuera. Mrs. Gray returned to Cambridge six months ago on a visit to her daughter. She is survived by three daughters—Mesdames Harvey, of Hastings; Wright, of Pukerimu; and Miss Gray, of Remuera. Her only son was killed in the war. MRS. MARY ANN MURRAY Mrs. Mary Ann Murray, who died at Dannevirkc recently at the age of 84, was born in Killarney, Ireland, and came to New Zealand 64 years ago. She married the lute Mr. William Murray in Auckland and they settled in the Bay of Islands, where Mr. Murray died 40 years ago. Mrs. Murray later removed to Hawke’s Bay. Mrs. Murray is survived by seven sons, Mr. T. Murray, Ohakune, Mr. William Murray, Te Kuiti, Mr. .Tames Murray, Mr. I. D. Murray, Auckland, Mr. W. Murray, Whangarei, Mr. L. Murray, Wairoa, and Mr. G. Murray, Great Barrier Island, and six daughters. Mrs. P. Keith, Mrs. B. McElroy, Auckland. Mrs. E. Walker, Wellington, Mrs. B. Hughes, Hokitika, Mrs. I. Porbes, Opotiki, and Mrs. A. Lawson, Dannevirke

MR. J. M. KILLEN WHANG ARE I'S FIRST MAYOR The first Mayor of Whangarei, Mr. James Miller Killen, died at his residence in Maunu Road on Sunday evening, aged 80 years. Mr. Killen was a native of County Down, Ireland, and graduated M.A. at Belfast. He entered the ministry of the Presbyterian Church, and was called to a charge in Scotland under the .Established Church. He then decided to go to New Zealand, and. accompanied by his wife, landed in Taurangu. where he ministered for a year. He afterwards went to Whangarei. and became the first pastor of the Presbyterian Church, which position he occupied from 1883 to ISS7, when he resigned in order to enter the legal profession.' He was elected Mayor on the constitution of the borough on October 27, 1896, and again in 1901-2 and 1904-5. lie was also the first chairman of the board of governors of Whangarei High School, an institution in which he was keenly interested. At the Whangarei Police Court this morning Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., adjourned the court until noon as a mark of respect for Mr.Killen. Mr. W. Carruth. senior member of the Bar, alluded to the exemplary life of Mr. Killen as a solicitor, public man, and first Mayor of Whangarei.
