EVIL HABITS CONTINUED
YOUNG MAN’S THEFTS
“BAD CASE,” SAYS JUDGE
Pleading guilty to two charges of theft, William Freney Keenan, aged 25, was sentenced in the Supreme Court this morning to two years* imprisonment by Mr. Justice MacGregor.
Mr. Mathews, for prisoner, said it was out of the question to say very much for the young man. He had offended before, but had gone straight for some time.
Keenan had been associated in a sort of loose partnership, which proved too much for his weak nature. The sum of £2BO had been stolen, but considerable restitution had been made. Prisoner had kept out of trouble for three years.
For the Crown, Mr. V. R. Meredith said the prisoner had committed a series of thefts. Part of the stolen money had been used in the purchase of a motor-car. “It looks as if the offences were the continuation of evil habits,” said counsel.
“This is a bad case,” said his Honour. “He has apparently started on a career of crime five years ago and has been convicted four times. It seems clear that prisoner is of the dishonest type and apparently lias made no serious effort to reform.”
Probation, said his Honour, was quite out of the question.
