STRAND
“ANNA KARENINA” “Anna Karenina,” the perfect picture, is now in its second week of screening: at the Strand Theatre, which is still crowded daily by enthusiastic and delighted picturegoers. John Gilbert and Greta Garbo head a notable cast in the vivid new Russian story, with George Fawcett, Emily Fitzroy, Brandon Hurst.- Philippe Be Lacy, and others, directed by Edmund Goulding. It is a grippingromance of a woman who sacrifices all for love, to be dogged .by a sinister fate. “The Coppelia Ballet,” a gorgeous Russian prologue precedes the screening of “Anna Karnina.” This is produced by and features Mile. Valeska, who exquisitely performs several delightful Russian dances. Eve Bentley and her Strand Symphony Orchestra play a special Russian musical programme. “Marche Slave” (Tschaikowsky) is being featured as the overture, while included among the incidental music are “Canzonetta” (Tschaikowsky), “Swan Song,” from “Lohengrin” (Wagner), “Russian Scenes” (Trimel), “Schummerlied” (Schumann), and Three Songs by Brahms. “Rainy Bays is the title of the latest Our Gang comedy being presented. The story is built around the frantic efforts of the gang to repaper and redecorate the interior of the house during the absence of the mother, on a rainy day. To say the least, the effect is weird but wonderful. But when mother returns home! To relate what happens would spoil the fun! “Thrills in Many Lands” is the only other film on the programme.
