“WHAT IS TRUTH?”

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH The subject of the lesson-sermon in the Christian Science Church yesterday was “Truth,” the Golden Text being taken from St. John viii., 31, 32: “If ye continue in My word, then are ye My disciples indeed: and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Citations forming the Lesson-Ser-mon included the following from the Bible: “Pilate therefore said unto ITim, ‘Art thou a king, then?’ Jesus answered, ‘Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause cam© I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth heareth My voice.’ Pilate saith unto him. ‘What is truth?’” (St. John xviii: 37, 38.) The Lesson-Sermon also included the following citations from the Christian Science textbook: “The question, ‘What is Truth,’ convulses the world. Many are ready to meet this inquiry with th© assurance which comes of understanding; but more are blinded by their old illusions, and try to ‘give it pause.’ ” Prayer cannot change the unalterable truth, nor can prayer alone give us an understanding of truth: but grayer, coupled with a fervent habitual desire to know and do the will of God, will bring us into all truth.” (“Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures,” by Mary Baker Eddy, pp 223, II.)
