DRURY HOTEL BURNED
BUILDING AND CONTENTS A TOTAL LOSS BUCKET-BRIGADE SAVES SHOPS (From Oxir Own Correspondent.) PAPAKURA, To-day. The Drury Hotel and its contents was totally destroyed by fire last evening. The Drury Hotel, a large two-storey brick building, a familiar landmark with travellers for many years, owned by Hancock and Co., Ltd., and occupied by Mr. Sam Robertson, the lessee, was discovered to be on fire at 9.45 p.m., last evening, and with no firefighting plant available was destroyed.
The burning building provided a spectacular blaze for about two hours, and sparks from it fell on the two grocers shops occupied by Messrs. K. Gardiner and W. J. Brooks respectively, and also on the Drury Hall. The heat from the burning hotel cracked the windows, but smart work by a hastily-formed bucket brigade saved them from further damage. Fanned by the strong wind the hotel burned fiercely and after a time the brick walls collapsed with a roar. The licensee and his wife were away at the time.
The hotel had only recently been renovated and had electric light installed, and nothing was saved. Had the wind been blowing in the opposite direction nothing could have saved Mr. Pegler’s garage and residence from catching alight. The building was insured for £4,000 and the contents for £7OO or £BOO.
